The Time Warner division Warner Bros. has said that they would introduce a high definition DVD disc that can hold films and TV shows in rival and incompatible formats.

The company claims that they have developed a “Total HD Disc” which would solve their problem of choosing between the rivals HD DVD and Blu-Ray format.

Sony is the driving force behind Blu-Ray format while Toshiba is developing and promoting the HD DVD format.

Both the media requires their own players which are totally incompatible with each other. This new media from Warner would solve the problem for the customers who can buy a single DVD which would work on both the players.

Ron Sanders, President of Warner Home Video said in a statement: “The Total High-Definition Disc allows consumers to fully embrace high-definition viewing. Warner Bros. was a force in creating the current market dominance of the standard DVD, and we hope that THD will make it easier for the average consumer to enjoy this next level of technology.”

IBMIBM today announced it is working with Circuit City Stores, Inc., a leading specialty retailer of consumer electronics, to explore how to apply virtual worlds and 3-D environments to retail business models.

The relationship aims to experiment with the introduction of virtual worlds and 3-D environments into the multi-channel retailing environment. As retailers focus on improving the customers’ experience, connecting the virtual world with the real world to solve business problems can create a richer, more immersive experience for Circuit City’s customers. This work is an extension of IBM and Circuit City’s existing systems collaboration.

IBM Logo Scientists from IBM, Macronix and Qimonda today announced joint research results that give a major boost to a new type of computer memory with the potential to be the successor to flash memory chips, which are widely used in computers and consumer electronics like digital cameras and portable music players.

The advancement heralds future success for “phase-change” memory, which appears to be much faster and can be scaled to dimensions smaller than flash – enabling future generations of high-density “non-volatile” memory devices as well as more powerful electronics. Non-volatile memories do not require electrical power to retain their information. By combining non-volatility with good performance and reliability, this phase-change technology may also enable a path toward a universal memory for mobile applications.

After years of selling online music digitally wrapped with copy and playback restrictions designed to hinder piracy, major music labels are beginning to make some songs available in the unrestricted MP3 file format.

The releases are part of an experiment to gauge demand for tracks that can be played on any digital music player capable of playing MP3s, one of the oldest music compression formats.

Normally, copy-protected tracks are only playable on certain devices. By selling MP3s, recording companies can ensure they can be played on Apple Computer Inc.’s market-leading iPod players without going through Apple’s iTunes Music Store.

Wde LensSouth Korean researchers have designed and built an inexpensive optical lens that collects light from a large area and produces a virtually distortion-free wide-angle image. Standing in contrast to commonly known “fisheye” lenses, which produce significant amounts of visual distortion, low-distortion wide-angle lenses can potentially improve image-based applications such as security-camera systems and robot navigation. The new wide-angle lens is lighter, smaller and more affordable than commercially available “rectilinear” lenses, which also produce low-distortion views. The researchers present their new feat of optical technology in the Dec. 1 issue of Applied Optics, a publication of the Optical Society of America.

AMD Athlon FX SEATTLE (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. unveiled three new high-end computer processors on Wednesday as the chipmaker battles rival Intel Corp. for the “power users” that often set industry buying trends.

AMD also announced aggressive pricing for the chips, known as the Athlon 64 FX-70 series, which will be sold in pairs for $599 to $999, depending on performance. The company’s previous high-end chip, the FX-62, sells for $713.

Computers equipped with more than one processor typically are servers or workstations — machines meant to run business networks or crunch mountains of data — rather than consumer desktop PCs.

Opera Mini 3.0Norwegian Opera Software ASA, which has developed the well known Opera browser, has come out with a new version of its browser for mobile phones, Opera Mini 3.0. The company said the new browser can be used in a mobile phone for practically all browsing functions, including uploading pictures and video clips and accessing emails as well undertaking online transactions.

The browser is optimized to cut down on the size of data transferred to the mobile phone, which has been possible through server-side data compression process. This compression enables the processing of web pages on even basic phones and brings down the costs involved in data transfer for subscribers with limited plans.

Because many e-mails and documents are printed out for brief viewing and then soon discarded or recycled, Xerox invented printing technology that creates images that last only a day.

The technology, dubbed Erasable Paper, could lead to a significant reduction in the amount of paper used in an office, because once the image fades away, the paper can be used over and over.

“Despite our reliance on computers to share and process information, there is still a strong dependence on the printed page for reading and absorbing content,” said Paul Smith, a Xerox manager, in a written statement. “Of course, we’d all like to use less paper, but we know from talking with customers that many people still prefer to work with information on paper. Self-erasing documents for short-term use offers the best of both worlds.”

Intel Corp. said on Monday it is making prototypes of computer processors using new manufacturing techniques that further shrink circuitry, making the chips run faster and use less power.

The development is a further sign that the world’s biggest microchip maker is recovering from a series of missteps that caused it to lose market share to rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

The chips take Intel’s latest basic chip design — called the Core microarchitecture — and shrink it down to circuits measuring just 45 nanometers wide, nearly a third narrower than current models.

Frequent visitors to blogs and Internet forums may be particularly at risk of identity theft due to an exploit that prompts the Firefox and Internet Explorer password managers to give away their protected information. Both Mozilla and Microsoft have acknowledged the problem and are working on fixes.

A software security researcher has warned that the password manager features of Mozilla’s open source Firefox 2.0 and Microsoft’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer (IE) Web browsers could be exploited, placing unsuspecting users at risk.

Users of Firefox or Explorer, both of which may be vulnerable to the attack known as “Reverse Cross Site Request” (RCSR), are not fooled directly by the password theft exploit.

Nintendo Wii Do you know what the first condition of a perfect console launch is? Releasing enough units so that everyone can get one! Well, if not everyone, at least as many as possible.

Of the three competitors on the console market, Nintendo seems to be the only one to have understood this necessity. Sony would have certainly liked to have millions of consoles available for sale, but problems determined by the incorporation of the BluRay unit didn’t allow the Japanese company such a luxurious release of its product.

Microsoft released Xbox 360 a year ago, however, as it didn’t respect this condition, the unit was sold out shortly after its launch.
